General Drama Submissions Guidelines:
Here at Jenny, we have a soft spot for pieces that have a
strong sense of place and setting, or work with local Rustbelt or working class
themes that are such an integral part of Jenny and our home here in Youngstown.
However, we also love various other stories, so no genre is off limits.
For drama submissions, we really want you to take advantage
of the fact that the story is meant for the stage. A play is defined as a full
piece, not a skit or scene. The play should consist of a beginning, middle and
end, as well as fleshed out characters and conflict, just as any other story
should. Like in all of Jenny Magazine’s sections, no subject is off limits, but
playwrights should avoid being edgy for the sake of being edgy. We are looking
for substance. We are looking for a play that makes us think. We are looking
All submissions must
be in accordance to the issue’s theme, if an issue theme exists. Failure to do
so will result in rejection.
- Pieces must range from 4 to 10 minutes
(9 pages or fewer in 12pt. Times New Roman font). Please read play aloud and
time it to make sure it is under 10 minutes.
- Must follow standard play format.
- Please submit as a PDF
- Include title page and a Dramatis
Personae page. These do not count as part of the 9 pages or fewer limit.
- Please remove your name and contact
information from the piece.
We accept only one
submission per category at a time, as long as it falls within the page count.
As writers, we here at the Jenny know
that it can be frustrating waiting around to hear back from publications about
your submission(s). That’s why we not only allow simultaneous submissions, we
encourage them. Send your work out to as many different places as you can. All
we ask is that you notify us promptly if your work is accepted elsewhere.
Withdrawing a piece is as easy as going to your account in the submissions
manager and clicking the “withdraw” button.
Submissions will be open from August 1 to October 1 for our Fall 2017 Issue.
