General Fiction Guidelines:
Here at Jenny, we have a soft spot for pieces that have a
strong sense of place and setting, or work with local Rustbelt or working class
themes that are such an integral part of Jenny and our home here in Youngstown.
However, we also love various other stories, so no genre is off limits.
We believe good
writing is good writing. That being said, we strongly discourage gratuitous
anything—sex, violence, profanity—just for the sake of trying to be “edgy.” We
understand that these elements are often essential to a writer’s vision, but if
they do not serve any purpose other than shock value, your piece is likely to
be rejected. We strive to publish works of substance.
All submissions must
be in accordance to the issue’s theme, if an issue theme exists. Failure to do
so will result in rejection.
All prose (fiction/creative
non-fiction) should be formatted as such:
- One-inch margins all around
- Left justified
- 12-point font—Times New Roman
- Pages numbered (do not put headers with name, but
including the title of the piece with the numbers would be appreciated)
- We read our submissions blindly to ensure everyone’s
work is judged on its merit alone. There will be a place for your name
when you go to the submissions manager.
- Word-count 1,500 - 7,000 words (we are willing to
consider exceptional pieces that fall below or exceed this limit, but the
work must be so good that it justifies making such an exception.)
We accept only one
submission per category at a time, as long as it falls within the word count.
As writers, we here at the Jenny know
that it can be frustrating waiting around to hear back from publications about
your submission(s). That’s why we not only allow simultaneous submissions, we
encourage them. Send your work out to as many different places as you can. All
we ask is that you notify us promptly if your work is accepted elsewhere.
Withdrawing a piece is as easy as going to your account in the submissions
manager and clicking the “withdraw” button.
Submissions will be open from August 1 to October 1 for our Fall 2017 Issue.
